Cake or Present?

When someone asked whether you like to join in a birthday celebration, what do you choose to chip in?

Both the cake and present?

But if your budget don't allow.. do you just chip in the cake OR the present??

Honestly... I thought it is strange to just chip in one and not the other.. unless the gift cost is so so so expensive and you really have no spare cash..
But when the cost of both are low... why choose to share in the cake only and not the present? I thought sharing in the present is more significant compare to cake.. since the cake would be gone after cutting and eating?

Can't help but think that the reason for sharing in the cake is because you will get a slice of it in return for the contribution..
